VOUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

VOLUNTEERING IS THE HEART OF AAUW

Interested in joining the Reston-Herndon Education Committee?

Our branch has always been interested in education and has had many programs over the years that have helped our local schools. We had a very successful mentoring program at Forest Edge ES for over 13 years, participated in the STEM programs both in Reston and after it was moved to Northern Virginia Community College in Annandale, and awarded scholarships to students at our two High Schools – South Lakes and Herndon.  Several years ago, we redirected those funds to support a second-year, female student majoring in one of the STEM areas at  Northern Virginia Community College – Loudoun Campus. Most recently, the branch bestowed cash awards of $500 for essays from juniors at both high schools on topics of interest to AAUW. Should we now consider a new direction? Should we continue to give scholarships through NOVA? Go back to the high school students? Or perhaps go to the elementary level to support students who demonstrate qualities that reflect our goals? Should we restart a mentoring program? Should we partner with another branch for a STEM program?

The branch has formed an Education Committee to discuss the direction of our branch in support of our education goals – a top priority for 2023. If you would like to join this group which will continue to meet to assess last year’s success and explore other possibilities to support the branch Education Goals for 2023-24, please contact committee facilitator Roberta Sherman at shermanrs1<at> aol.com or Cyndi Shanahan, Branch Administrator, email cyndi9817 <at> gmail.com.
