The AAUW Reston Herndon Area Branch is deeply committed to the cause of salary equity for women. As active members of AAUW’s Lobby Corps, we are strong advocates for Congress to enact the Paycheck Fairness Act.

On the local level, our members have been promoting AAUW’s Work Smart online training by designing and distributing flyers to connect local residents with the valuable free training in salary negotiation.  Over 120 flyers were placed in community centers and public libraries in Reston and Herndon.  We are proud to have contributed to the 102,000 participants who took advantage of the training.

AAUW’s ambitious goal is to train 10 million women in salary negotiation by 2022.

Experts know that women are less likely than men to negotiate for salaries and raises. In fact, men are four times more likely to negotiate, Training people to do so is another way to move the needle forward on closing the gender pay gap.

AAUW’s Work Smart curriculum is based on the best research on how to best navigate the complexity of job offers and promotions. Through presentations and interactive exercises, participants learn to research fair and equitable salaries and benefits in their fields (and geographic areas) and to clearly tout the skills and experience they bring to the table. Participants also learn the precise words and tactics to use when negotiating, all of which helps build the necessary confidence to negotiate a fair salary or promotion.

Work Smart is also available as live, interactive training in many areas. In 2017, AAUW, District of Columbia Mayor Muriel Bowser, and the Mayor’s Office on Women’s Policy and Initiatives launched a large-scale grassroots initiative to teach 15,000 women by 2022 to negotiate their salaries and benefit packages with confidence. The initiative also aims to help close the gender pay gap in the District of Columbia.
